We are a research group from the Centre for Management Studies of Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), the Engineering School of the University of Lisbon. OpLog focuses on operations management and logistics research developing novel engineering systems models and techniques. We are based at Tagus Park campus, located in Oeiras, just 20 min from Lisbon city centre.
OpLog was created with the mission of developing research focusing on developing sound theoretical concepts with a close connection with industry. Aligned with that, our main competences are:
- Research and consultancy in operations management, logistics and supply chains management;
- Development of decision support tools for industrial processes and supply chains, comprising design, planning and operation;
- Expertise in Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), Social Life Cycle Assessment (S-LCA) and Sustainability.

Ana Barbosa-Póvoa is a Full Professor in Operations and Logistics, at the Engineering and Management Department of Instituto Superior Técnico (IST). She holds a PhD from the Imperial College of Science Technology and Medicine and her research focus is on developing a comprehensive understanding of complex problems in supply chains and operations management, supported by novel and sound engineering systems models and techniques. Sustainability, resilience, design and planning of supply chains are among the main addressed domains. She has created and coordinates the research group in Operations Management and Logistics (OpLog) at the Centre for Management Studies of IST. Ana has published widely and supervised several Master and PhD students. Ana research has led to several national and international awards.

Ana Isabel Carvalho has obtained her PhD in Chemical Engineering, in 2009, from Instituto Superior Técnico in a joint collaboration with the Technical University of Denmark. She is currently an Associate Professor at Instituto Superior Técnico, in Portugal. She is a researcher in the Centre for Management Studies of Instituto Superior Técnico (CEG-IST). Her research interests are related to sustainability, more specific in sustainable operations management and sustainable supply chains applying Life cycle methodologies in terms of costs, environment and social concerns. She has published more than 40 papers in international journals and proceedings indexed in Web of Knowledge. She has given more than 50 oral presentations at international conferences and invited seminars, namely at the Environmental Protection Agency USA. She has been awarded by several national and international awards, in pedagogical and scientific activities (e.g. Sustainable Engineering Forum Student Paper Award- AIChE, Green Project Awards).

Susana Relvas is currently an Associate Professor at the Department of Engineering and Management (DEG) of Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), University of Lisbon (UL), Portugal. She obtained her PhD in 2008 in Industrial Engineering and Management from IST. Her research interests are in Supply Chain Management, namely in the Oil Supply Chain, Biofuels Supply Chain, and Agri-Food Supply Chain. Also, she has interests on Logistics and Logistics Activities, namely in Warehousing and Retail Operations. Her research focuses on real world problems, using Operations Research and Management Science methods. Her work is developed in close collaboration with national and international companies and other research groups. Her research, teaching and supervising activities have already originated a number of awards, where is included the best young researcher from the former Technical University of Lisbon.

Inês Marques is Assistant Professor at the Department of Engineering and Management (DEG, IST, University of Lisbon), and Researcher at the Centre for Management Studies. Her main research areas focus on operations research for operations management, mainly to support planning and scheduling decisions and to improve health care service delivery. She works in several research projects in collaboration with health care service providers. She has published in journals in the areas of operations research and management science. She is currently co-Coordinator of the European Working Group on Operational Research Applied to Health Services (EWG ORAHS) and member of the board of the European Working Group on Practice of Operational Research (EWG POR). She holds a degree in Mathematics Applied to Economics and Management, a MSc in Operations Research and a PhD in Statistics and Operations Research.

Tânia Ramos is an Assistant Professor at the Engineering and Management Department at IST – University of Lisbon, where she teaches Logistics and Distribution, Supply Chain Management, and Project Management courses at the Master’s level. She received her Bachelor’s degree in Management from ISCTE-IUL, her Master’s degree in Operations Research and Systems Engineering from IST and her PhD in Engineering and Management from IST. Tânia’s research focuses mainly on modelling and solving real-world problems related with logistics systems planning, routing, sustainability, reverse logistics and waste management systems. She has several papers published in international journals. She is also the co-author of books in the field of logistics. She has coordinated several national projects on the fields of logistics and waste management.

Tânia Rute Pinto-Varela is Assistant Professor in Engineering and Management Department, in IST, University of Lisbon, and Researcher of the Centre for Management Studies of IST – CEG-IST. She holds a MSc in Operations Research and Process System, and a PhD in Industrial Engineering and Management from IST. She supervised several MSc and PhD students, and published more than 30 papers in international journals and proceedings indexed in Web of Knowledge. Currently she is Co-Coordinator of the BSc and MSc in Industrial Engineering and Management at IST. Her research interests are in Process Systems Engineering over the subjects such as Design, Planning, Scheduling, Flexible Manufacturing, Energy, applying methodologies from Manufacturing Science and Operational Research Process, among other research interests. Its research cover sectors, as Manufacturing Industries, Automotive, Aerospace, Pharmaceutical, Food, Distribution, among others.

Bruna Mota is a researcher at the Center for Management and Logistics at Instituto Superior Técnico (CEG-IST), University of Lisbon (UL). Her work focuses on Sustainable Supply Chains, namely in the development of decision support tools for the design and planning of Sustainable Supply Chains and its application to solve real world problems. Bruna is also an Invited Teaching Assistant at the Department of Engineering and Management (DEG) of IST, in the field of Operations Management and Supply Chain Management. She obtained her PhD in 2018 in the MIT-Portugal Program Leaders for Technical Industries, in the Engineering and Management research field. She was awarded with the Euro Working Group Outstanding PhD Thesis Award on Sustainable Supply Chains in 2019.

Daniel Santos has recently joined the research team of the Centre for Management Studies of Instituto Superior Técnico (CEG-IST), after working at SISCOG since October 2018. He graduated in Applied Mathematics (2013) and obtained a master’s degree in Statistics and Operations Research (2015), both in the Faculty of Sciences, University of Lisbon. He concluded the PhD in the same institution in the area of Statistics and Operations Research in April 2019, specializing in Optimization. As a result of the PhD studies he co-authored three papers in top journals of the Operations Research and Management Science field. Daniel Santos has received Academic Excellence Awards for the best graduated student of the Faculty of Sciences, University of Lisbon, at the bachelor’s degree in 2013 and at the master’s degree in 2015. Daniel Santos is interested in developing exact and heuristic methods for combinatorial optimization problems, with a particular emphasis on health care applications.

Andreia Santos is currently working on her PhD in Engineering and Management at Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), University of Lisbon, Portugal. She works in the same institution as a Teaching Assistant at the Department of Management and Engineering. Carolina Soares de Morais is graduated in Mining Engineering from the Universidade do Estado de Minas Gerais, with exchange experience at Universidad de Vigo, where she attended Industrial Engineering subjects. She has professional experience in fractional freight transportation (4 years working with fleet management in a logistics company in Brazil) and in topography (internship). Carolina is currently a PhD candidate in Engineering Management at Instituto Superior Técnico - Universidade de Lisboa, in Lisbon, and a researcher at the Center of Engineering Management (CEG-IST), with research focus on route optimization problems applied to smart waste management.

Fábio Coelho is a PhD student in Engineering and Management at IST and researcher at Centre for Management Studies of Instituto Superior Técnico (CEG-IST) from IST-ID. He concluded the MSc degree in Civil Engineering in 2015 at IST. His main research interests include simulation, operations research, logistics and decision support systems. Over the last few years, he has participated in several conferences on the field in order to disseminate the work developed. Currently, he is involved in a European Project related to Industry 4.0 and his research is in close collaboration with industry.

Mafalda Ivo de Carvalho is a PhD student following the Doctoral Program in Engineering and Management at the Department of Engineering and Management (DEG), IST, and Researcher at the Centre for Management Studies. Her main research areas focus on Supply Chain Collaboration and Sustainable Supply Chains, mainly in the development of conceptual methodologies to guide the implementation and development of trust-wordy collaborative relationships in order to achieve sustainable supply chains. Currently, she works in a research project focused on sustainable and collaborative agri-food supply chains, in collaboration with several companies operating in different supply chains levels. Mariana Mesquita da Cunha is a PhD student in Engineering Management at IST, CEG-IST, Instituto Superior Técnico, Lisbon. Mariana received the MSc degree in Mechanical Engineering in 2018 at IST. Her master thesis was on the topic "Scheduling of Flexible Job Shop Problem in Dynamic Environments". In this work she studied both the scheduling and rescheduling problem in uncertain environments with stochastic perturbations, applying both MILP, metaheuristics and multi-agent based systems. After her master thesis, she was part of a research project with pharmaceutical industry, developing automation platforms, simulation tools and automatic scheduling applications for analytical laboratories. Currently Mariana’s research focus is on decision support tools and optimization of emergency medical service systems, working in workforce management, vehicle location and relocation, and demand forecast.

Mariana Oliveira is a researcher at Center for Management Studies in Instituto Superior Técnico (CEG-IST). She is currently working in a project named “ImproveOR - Building Decision Support Tools for Improved Operating Room Management”, which aims to improve the operating rooms efficiency using optimization methods, based in a collaboration with two Portuguese hospitals. She received her MSc in Biomedical Engineering in December 2018 in IST. Her master thesis involved the development of an optimization system for elective surgeries scheduling in Centre Hospitalier Universitaire du Québec, in Canada. Her main research focus are the operations and logistics management, namely the development of mathematical models and processes optimization.

Marta Bubicz is a researcher in Sustainability in Supply Chain Management, having an interdisciplinary background. The current research is on social sustainability management in the apparel supply chain. Director and team leader at Sigem Institute, responsible for project management and partnerships between governmental and non-governmental organizations for Professional Qualifications. Significant experience as a professor and consultant in strategic management seeking to drive the research for the companies practice. She was involved in a research project on methodologies and technologies for sustainable solid waste management, emphasis on reduction and recovery in urban environments. The result outlined a panorama waste management in Brazil, and her work is in a book chapter. Focus on qualitative methodologies having several papers published in international journals and participation in international conferences. Paulo Abreu is a researcher at the Centre for Management Studies of Instituto Superior Técnico (CEG-IST). His current research focus is on developing decision support tools to improve the operations of emergency medical services. He joined the research team after he obtained an MSc degree in Industrial Engineering and Management in 2019 at IST. His master thesis proposes a decision support tool based on heuristics to deal with the container relocation problem. He earned his Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering in 2014 at the University of Mogi das Cruzes (São Paulo - BR). Paulo was awarded as an outstanding student of the Mechanical Engineering course (2014 Graduates) by the state of São Paulo's Regional Council for Engineering and Agronomy (CREA-SP). He worked as a Mechanical Engineer in the project of the Hydroelectric Power Plant of Belo Monte (Pará-Brazil), designing mechanical and electromechanical systems and did an internship at the Cost Management department of CPTM (São Paulo public transport company).
